Hang Gliding
If you've ever dreamed of comfortably flying through the air, somehow you've
known what hang gliding feels like. Some hang glider pilots have flown many
different sorts of aircraft: airplanes, sailplanes, ultralights, etc. All
of us agree on one thing. Nothing else compares; and nothing else matters for those few precious hours:
no cell phone, no pager, just you and the sky. Many training flights are
glides from the top of the hill to the bottom, but most flights result in
altitude gains using the same thermals and lift that eagles and hawks use.
Pilots learn to use the same strategies and techniques these birds employ
to get flights lasting hours at a time and possibly covering hundreds of
miles. A former Soaring Center instructor flew a hang glider 226 miles last
summer to set Utah's cross-country record. Learning to literally fly like
a bird is an experience unlike any other.
